DERMATOLOGY NURSE CONSULTANT

When you have a skin condition it can be distressing and make normal day to day activities uncomfortable, painful or sometimes embarrassing. It is important to seek specialist advice so the condition can be assessed and treated and any itching, soreness or discomfort relieved. As a dermatology nurse consultant I can offer you assessment, treatment and advice for acne, eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis and rosacea.

What is a dermatology nurse consultant?

I am a registered nurse who has specialised in dermatology for over 20 years. I am able to prescribe the treatments and medicines that are used to treat skin conditions. I also have a Masters Degree in advanced practice that has supported my development in reviewing new patient referrals from GPs and self referrals from patients and managing their skin conditions.

How would an appointment help?

As an experienced dermatology nurse I am aware of how distressing skin conditions can be and also that many people find the information confusing. My aim is to find out how the condition is affecting your day to day life, what has worked in the past and what has not helped, then to develop a treatment plan. I will discuss how the treatments are used and how to incorporate them into your daily routine. The first appointment is timetabled for at least 30 minutes to allow sufficient time for a full assessment.

What will happen at the appointment?

I will ask you questions about your health and lifestyle, find out how the skin condition is affecting you and what is causing you the most difficulty. I will examine your skin. We will then review the treatment options and plan which treatments will be the most effective and also how you will manage the treatments in your day to day life. If required I will demonstrate how to apply the treatment.

Has the service been helpful to other people?

In the patient survey in 2012 all the respondents felt that they were able to answer all the questions they wanted to ask and 100% would consider recommending the service to other people. Comments that were also added:

“ Friendly, helpful and very patient / client focused”

“ Friendly and comfortable atmoshpere”

“My problem was recognised and understood, I was then able to receive the appropriate treatment”

“Rebecca was very professional and friendly. I suffer from rosacea which my GP had attempted to treat without success”

“Rebecca diagnosed the condition and prescribed appropriate creams which have done the trick for which I am very grateful as it is such an embarrassing condition” “Thank you, you are a star”
